Floor 1 Chase Test
No puzzles, no tricks—just you, the dark, and something that will not stop coming.
The Floor 1 Chase Test is the very first hurdle every new entrant must clear to step into the Tower proper. Set in a pitch-dark, fog-choked expanse, it pits the challenger against a relentless, hulking pursuer in a pure survival-of-speed trial. There are no puzzles to solve, no riddles to answer—only the pounding of your own feet and the closing distance behind you.
As the gateway test, it establishes the Tower's brutal design philosophy from the very first step: the structure will test you not with cleverness or power, but with the most primal instinct of all—survival. For the group emerging from the Second Basement, it is the moment the abstract dream of 'climbing' becomes a very real, very physical threat.

Lore & Background
The Tower's architects understood that before a climber can demonstrate wit, strength, or resolve, they must first prove they can keep their legs moving when fear is a living thing behind them. The Chase Test strips every advantage away: no allies to strategize with, no items to deploy, no time to think. The fog swallows sight, the ground is uneven, and the chaser is a massive, shadow-draped form that seems to close the gap with inhuman patience. What it truly measures is composure under sustained physical and psychological pressure—the ability to run when every nerve screams to stop.
For the Second Basement group, the test is also symbolic. They have spent their entire lives in a world where the Tower was a distant, almost mythic structure. Now the Tower is a wall of darkness pressing in, and the first thing it asks is not 'who are you' but 'can you keep going?' The chaser does not care about their stories, their ambitions, or their bonds. It simply runs. In that sense, the Floor 1 test is the Tower's way of saying: intent is cheap. Endurance is currency.
The test also sets a tonal benchmark for everything that follows. Later floors will layer in deception, moral dilemmas, and escalating danger, but the Chase Test is the baseline: the Tower will always, in some form, chase you. The only variable is how fast you are, how well you read the dark, and whether you can keep your breathing steady when the thing behind you is no longer a distant shape but a wall of teeth and shadow.
In Their Own Story
The fog tasted like rust. Juhar could not see more than three steps ahead, and the ground shifted under his boots like the deck of a rocking ship. Behind him—always behind him, never quite close enough, never far enough—the chaser exhaled. The sound was wet, enormous, patient. He ran. His lungs burned. The fog swallowed the world into a single grey corridor, and every shadow at the edge of his vision might be a wall, might be a branch, might be the thing's outstretched limb. He did not look back. Looking back was how you stopped. Stopping was how you became part of the dark. Somewhere ahead, past the next bend in the fog, there was an exit. He could not see it. He could only run toward the idea of it, one footfall after another, while the Tower watched from above and decided whether his legs were made of enough.
Reader's Guide
Floor: 1. The Chase Test is the Tower's entry-level trial, encountered immediately upon leaving the Second Basement and entering the first proper floor.
Rules & Conditions: The challenger is placed in a dark, fog-saturated open area littered with low obstacles—rocks, broken structures, uneven ground. Visibility is severely limited. A single large chaser creature is released behind the participant. The sole objective is to survive: do not be caught. There is no combat element; the chaser is not meant to be defeated, only outrun.
Unique Mechanic: The fog is the true antagonist. It removes the ability to plan a route, judge distance, or spot the chaser's exact position. The test rewards rhythm, spatial awareness, and the discipline to keep moving without panic. The chaser's speed is calibrated so that a panicked, erratic runner will be overtaken, while a steady, focused one can maintain a gap.
Attempts & Results: The Second Basement group, led by Juhar (Sunny), passes the test. Their success is attributed to raw determination and the instinct to keep running rather than freezing or fighting.
Design Philosophy: The Tower begins with the body before the mind. Before it tests your cleverness, your morality, or your power, it asks the simplest and most unforgiving question: can you keep going when the dark is closing in? It is a filter for resolve, and a reminder that the Tower's first demand is endurance.
Did You Know?
- The Chase Test contains no combat or puzzle element whatsoever—its entire challenge is sustained physical endurance and composure in low visibility.
- The fog in the test area is not merely atmospheric; it actively prevents the challenger from reading the chaser's position or planning an escape route, making it a psychological test as much as a physical one.
- As the very first test, it serves as a universal gate: every climber, regardless of future power or status, must pass it on equal footing with no external aids.
- The test's simplicity is deliberate in the Tower's design language—later floors layer complexity, but Floor 1 isolates a single variable: the will to keep moving.
